A remarkable 18th-century map of southern Italy and adjoining islands, engraved on laid paper by Heinrich Homann based on maps and descriptions by Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni. This captivating early engraving is a must-have for someone with a keen appreciation for Italian history and culture.
It is titled as follows:
Le Regni di Sicilia e Sardegna colle adiacenti isole de Corsica, Elba, Malta, e Liparee, o di Vulcano, non men che parte delle Spiagge Settentrionali dell'Africa, e delle Meridionali d'Italia.
(roughly translates as: The Kingdoms of Sicily, and Sardinia, with the adjacent Islands of Corsica, Elba, Malta, and Liparee, or of Vulcano, as well as Part of the Northern Coasts of Africa, and the Southern Coasts of Italy).
It has a decorative cartouche on the lower left of a seated warrior and flying cherubs displaying coat of arms of the different states while a warship on the right fires its cannon. The Latin inscription can be summarized as follows "the latest and most accurate hydro-geographic exhibition of the Kingdoms and islands of Sicily and Sardinia where, according to the principles of stereographic perfection, and according to the current state of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Malta, and other major and minor islands located in this maritime tract....from the most reliable maps, and particular descriptions of regions collected by Rizzi Zannoni geographer of the Patavians (Padua); in the care of the heir of the Homannians, Nuremberg 1762."
Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni (1736–1814) was an Italian cartographer and engraver who worked extensively in France, serving as the official cartographer to King Louis XVI. His work includes the "Atlas Moderne," praised for its accurate and artistically designed maps.
Heinrich Homann (1711–1784) was an 18th-century German cartographer and engraver based in Nuremberg. He was a member of a prominent family of German cartographers who made significant contributions to the field of mapmaking during the 17th and 18th centuries.
