Antique French Bronze Centerpiece Tazza with Lion Handles Ram Heads Signed Levillain Entryway Centerpiece Greek Revival Wedding Gift Compote
This outstanding 19th Century French Greek Revival bronze tazza features a sculptural center medallion with the profile of Arethusa, the beautiful nymph associated with water from Greek mythology, surrounded by frolicking dolphins. The medallion is inscribed with Greek characters meaning "of Syracuse" (modern-day Sicily). The tazza is adorned with two beautifully modeled figural handles ending in ram heads, topped by sculptural felines.
Perfect as a footed bowl centerpiece in an entryway, dining room, or similar space, this tazza also makes a wonderful gift for a wedding or other milestone celebration.
Clearly marked with the signature of Ferdinand Levillain (1837-1905), a renowned French sculptor, this piece exemplifies his Neo-Grec style. Levillain was celebrated for his works during the reign of Napoleon III, receiving numerous honors from the Paris Salon and World Fairs. In 1892, he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, and his works are included in the Musée d'Orsay collection.
The design is inspired by the alluring 400 BC Syracuse Decadrachm coin, a testament to Levillain's expertise in capturing classical themes. In very good condition with minor imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
