This elegant American sterling silver sugar caster, or muffineer, was made by Theodore B. Starr of New York and reflects the refined craftsmanship of late 19th-century American silver. The octagonal body rests on four footed legs decorated with acanthus leaves and is topped with a finely pierced lid and flame-shaped finial, giving the piece strong architectural presence.
Traditionally used for sprinkling sugar over desserts and pastries, it also serves beautifully as a table accent, sideboard display, or collector’s piece. Its substantial weight and classic form make it well suited for formal entertaining, as a decorative object, or an exceptional gift for a silver collector or lover of historic American design.
The underside is marked with a star, “STERLING,” “THEODORE B. STARR,” and “NEW YORK 9.” Theodore Burr Starr (1837–1907) was a prominent New York jeweler whose firm operated from 1877 to 1900 and, at its height, rivaled Tiffany & Co.
