A striking and historically evocative piece of Americana, this antique silk embroidery features a patriotic American eagle surrounded by flags and banners, executed in raised trapunto needlework and preserved in its original frame. Trapunto is a textile technique that creates a raised, padded, three-dimensional effect on fabric. At the initiative of President Theodore Roosevelt, the famous Great White Fleet—16 battleships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet painted in peacetime white—embarked on its celebrated voyage around the world beginning in December 1907. Intended to demonstrate America's growing naval power and global presence, the fleet's journey became one of the most significant diplomatic and military events of the early twentieth century.

During this period, skilled artisans in Yokohama produced finely embroidered silk souvenirs for naval personnel and Western visitors passing through Japan. These custom-made works served as treasured commemorations of the voyage. Today, they are highly sought after for their historical significance, craftsmanship, and visual appeal and hard to find in such good condition.
