Georges Braque Collotype titled "Le Pot de Fleurs," signed by artist c.1941, limited edition. Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a 20th C. French painter, collagist, draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor who worked with Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz (who were from his hometown of Le Havre), Matisse, Monet, Cézanne, and painted alongside Pablo Picasso when Picasso was first starting to develop his Cubist style. Braque and Picasso painted side by side in Céret in the French Pyrenees, influencing and inspiring each other while experimenting with new techniques, this is how and where the Cubist movement began. Their work between 1908-1912 is difficult and at times nearly impossible to distinguish from one another. At the time they didn’t always sign their art, which was primarily collaborative and so overlapping even they lost track of which pieces belongs to whom. They were drawn together by a shared desire to see objects from different angles within the same frame, instead of painting the world from one perspective, straight-on, as it was. In 1912 they started experimenting with collage, first breaking female figures into pieces so they could see all angles at once. Braque mixed sand into paint creating a rough texture, glued wallpaper and faux wood grain to his pieces, and called it papier collé, hence Braque’s invention of the papier collé technique. The Cubism movement was a very intimate collaboration between Picasso and Braque. They worked together until World War I in 1914, when Braque enlisted with the French Army. In 1915, Braque suffered a terrible head injury in battle causing temporary blindness. He's quoted saying "The things that Picasso and I said to one another during those years will never be said again, and even if they were, no one would understand them anymore. It was like being roped together on a mountain."--Georges Braque. Braque's work is in most major museums throughout the world.
