Georges Braque Collotype titled "Le Pot de Fleurs," signed by artist dated 1941, limited edition of 225. Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a prominent 20th Century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. He worked with Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz, who were from his hometown of Le Havre. He was integral part of the Cubism movement. In 1908, Braque began painting alongside Pablo Picasso when Picasso was first starting to develop his Cubist style. Braque's subjects were ordinary objects, while Picasso embraced animation. They painted side by side in Céret in the French Pyrenees, highly influencing each other while combining techniques. Braque and Picasso's work between 1908-1912 is difficult nearly impossible to distinguish from one another. In 1912 they started experimenting with collage and Braque invented the papier collé technique. Cubism was a cohesive joint effort between Picasso and Braque. They worked together until World War I in 1914, when Braque enlisted with the French Army. In 1915, Braque suffered a head injury in battle causing temporary blindness. He's quoted saying "The things that Picasso and I said to one another during those years will never be said again, and even if they were, no one would understand them anymore. It was like being roped together on a mountain."-- Georges Braque. Braque's work is in most major museums throughout the world. In 2010, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris had 5 paintings stolen - The Pigeon with the Peas by Pablo Picasso, La Pastorale by Henri Matisse, Olive Tree near Estaque by Georges Braque, Woman with a Fan by Amedeo Modigliani and Still Life with Chandeliers by Fernand Léger valued at $123 million.
