Extraordinary and iconic pair of Murano opaline glass wall sconces made between 1990 and 1995 by the firm Barovier & Toso. The entire process of making these sconces is truly seductive: the skilled Master Glassmakers extracted from the furnace the glassy mass of opaline glass needed for each barrel and placed a gold foil on the part of the mixture collected from the crucible, at which point a Master provided the blowing operation, the foil broke down and dispersed in the mixture giving rise to a gold dust effect; with this system, a brilliant powder was created within the opaline glass that discreetly embellished the rods themselves, these were shaped and cut using traditional Murano techniques; then the pieces were placed in the tempering furnace where they cooled for many hours with skillful slowness and patience; then, completely free of heat, they were taken to the milling department where other expert artisans proceeded to sand, finish and finally polish them. After machining the individual glass components, the artisans assembled them into the desired sconce design. This process requires precision and attention to detail to ensure that the sconces are balanced and aesthetically pleasing. Once the glass components were assembled, the sconces were wired for lighting. The electrical components are carefully integrated into the design, allowing the sconces to light up beautifully when installed. The design history of Murano chandeliers and wall sconces reflects the evolution of glassmaking techniques and artistic styles over time. From traditional Venetian designs characterized by intricate filigree and floral motifs to more contemporary styles characterized by sleek lines and bold colors, Murano's lighting objects encapsulate a wide range of artistic expression. Barovier & Toso's "Fuochi d'Artificio" wall sconces are a remarkable example of the company's craftsmanship and design innovation. Inspired by the dazzling bursts of fireworks in the night sky, these sconces feature a series of three glass elements arranged in a dynamic and visually striking composition. Overall, Murano's appliques like the "Fireworks" exemplify the beauty, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance of Murano glassmaking, showcasing the enduring legacy of this centuries-old craft. Barovier & Toso is a Murano glass company in Venice.
The Barovier family's entrepreneurial activity began in the mid-13th century, making it the sixth oldest family business in the world and still in business today. The Fratelli Barovier firm was re-founded in 1878 by Benvenuto and Giuseppe Barovier, thus becoming Artisti Barovier. In 1926, Ercole Barovier, artist designer and master executor, Benvenuto's son, took over the artistic direction of the company, which in 1942, merged with the F.lli Toso glassworks, assuming its current name of Barovier & Toso. Ercole invented the new technique of hot coloring without melting the glass. The Palazzo Contarini in Murano, the current headquarters of Barovier & Toso, also houses the Barovier & Toso Private Museum of Glass Art. Barovier & Toso's legacy with its reputation for the quality and beauty of its glass artworks makes the company an icon in the Murano glass art arena.
