John Banvard (1815-1891)
Banvard achieved fame in the 19th century for his 12 ft x 1300 ft panoramic painting of the Mississippi River from the mouth of the Missouri all the way through Louisiana. There's too much information on Banvard to put here, so start with his wikipedia entry and search further to find out about the rolling mechanism that allowed the viewer to "travel" down all 1,200 miles of the river, his audience with Queen Victoria, the house he built to rival PT Barnum, and the musical written about him in 2015.
This drawing is from Banvard's later travels through the Middle East and Mediterranean
