Twelve-light chandelier by gaetano sciolari, production made for stilkronen, italy, 1970s. Eight lights at the bottom and four lights at the top. Gold plated brass. Transparent led crystal elements. The bulbs are surrounded by 24 vertical led crystal elements to diffuse the light with the principle of refraction. This is an interesting version of sciolari's production. He is usually known for bare, unshaded lights and large sculptural works in metal. Most of the time a play of light is missing. Here gaetano has used the classic crystal chandelier in a revised and updated contemporary design. A step into the past: chandeliers were made to have many upward lights (originally candles) to provide greater illumination for larger rooms. The addition of glass or crystal elements all around was not done to shade the light, but to refract it, creating the impression of multiplying the candles or light bulbs used. This play of light was used with all the leaves and frills of the murano chandeliers and french crystal chandeliers. The use of refraction results in the least loss of lumen. While shading usually loses 30 to 60% of the light output. In this chandelier the metal part has been stylized with vertical cylinders to support the bulbs at the top and bottom and horizontal arms to contain the refracting elements. He came to the same conclusion of using divergent lenses to better play with light, so the element, which looks like a sculpture by a.a. Moore, was designed with concave parts to diffuse the light. The same thing happens with glass trihedrons. The result is a great play of light with the elements of the fence receiving their own light. The use of led crystal creates a prism effect. Probably the producer of the 4% led crystal is alfredo rossi. The chandelier is in good condition, the metal shows signs of use and some stains typical of old gold-plated fixtures. I did a test with a magnet and all the round cylinders are brass, while the stem and curved arms are iron. Some elements are not straight when shooting. They may need to be straightened on site. Double circuit. It can be lit only at the top, only at the bottom or both. The overall height listed, body height is 40cm. Net weight 10 kilos and 22 lbs. The chandelier stem can be shortened to a minimum drop of 50cm. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
