This Theodolite is a precision tool used to guide the way of sailors. The telescope would be used to first sight a fixed object on the horizon, then measure the distance of the angles between it and the stars above. Once the measurements are taken it would allow one to calculate their exact global position. The compass would then guide the course of direction.
The decorative brass sextant includes a 2 part telescope with a leveling bubble, an adjustable arc, seated on a magnetic compass, with a side lever to lock and hold the pointer stationary. The riveted legs adjust to maintain a level platform.
