This Japanese 19th century merchant's chest was made of Kiri wood and iron during the Meiji period (1868-1912). This uncommon item displays numerous drawers, a top drawer, two medium ones and three small ones, a door and two sliding panels opening on a shelf. Each one features iron accents and handles contrasting with the pale natural color of the Kiri wood. The handles on the sides of remind us that at the end of the day, the first use of this piece was to be a merchants chest. This surprising 19th century Meiji Japanese merchants chest with iron accents would be an uncommon but lively storage unit in most homes, perhaps to be used as a jewel case in a bedroom or a catch all sitting on a desk.
