Each lion is carved from a massive block of stone and sits on a stand that features lightly carved drapery patterns. The lions are carved in a traditional Ming style, with cloud effect for their mane reminding us of their celestial nature. By tradition the animals face the same direction, in keeping with their role as guardians. These lions where probably placed in front of a temple in order to protect it thanks to their “scary” demeanor. These unusual stone lions made during the late Chinese Ming dynasty would be stunning decorative items in most homes, perhaps guarding an entrance or living room. See less
