Signed lower left, 'Clausen' for Don Clausen (American, 1930-2020) and dated 1974.
A self-proclaimed "sculptor of paint," Donald Clausen used tools of his own invention to create compositions ablaze with bold colors, shapes and textures. Clausen studied under Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn at the California College of Arts and Crafts in the late 1950s. The artist explored several forms and styles before recognizing his passion for spontaneity and risks characteristic of abstract expressionism.
