Framed dimensions: 17 x 1 x 27 inches
Born in Oswego, New York, Charles Grant was artistically inclined from an early age, painting his first seascape when he was eight and enrolling at the National Academy of Design in his early teens. He later continued his studies in the studios of Seymour J. Guy and Mauritz Frederik de Haas.
After painting Atlantic seascapes for twenty years, Grant's desire to paint the Pacific Ocean brought him to California in 1912. He lived and painted in San Francisco for the rest of his life, working from a studio on Franklin Street. An ardent sailor and marine artist, Grant was appointed official U.S navy artist when the American fleet visited Australia in 1925.
Charles Grant exhibited widely and with success including at the Bohemian Club and San Francisco Art Association annuals, the Panama Pacific Exposition (1915) and the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939) among numerous other venues. Grant's work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Bohemian Club (San Francisco), the De Young Museum (San Francisco), Bancroft Library (U.C. Berkeley) and the Syracuse Museum (New York) among others.
