The first and most devoted of Picasso's new companions in Paris was the poet Max Jacob whom he met at Ambroise Vollard's crowded gallery on the rue Laffitte. Vollard, already lunched as a dealer and publisher, arranged an exhibition of Picasso's paintings. The gourmet, painted shortly after his arrival, was included in his first Paris exhibition. It is an ingratiating anecdote, an appealing and somewhat saccharine prelude to more somber works. Picasso exploits the decorative possibilities of the design. The rhythmic silhouettes of the larger areas suggest a debt to Gauguin as well as to Art Nouveau. The color blue is increasingly pervasive.
