Signed in the print. Information regarding the original painting will be found by lifting the piece. Printed on one side. First American Edition. Excellent condition - never framed.

The brooding melancholy of the Blue period had lasted for more than three years. The artist's good friend, the poet and novelist Jaime Sabartes, recalls that at this time Picasso believed that art "emanates from sadness and pain". The frailty of the laundress is underlined by the ponderous feeling of weight as she presses down upon the iron. The tumbling strands of hair repeats the movement, and the effort of her body is emphasized by its distortion.

Compare the Woman Ironing with the Old Guitarist, which we offer for sale at our shop on Chairish. In both paintings the head and raised shoulder appear in the same position. The blind guitarist wails a chant of sorrow. The woman, however, seems less wretched and the wan, smiling face peculiarly resigned to the drudgery of the task. See less
