Despair gradually gave way to a mood still melancholy but more tender. For awhile many mannerisms persist - attenuated figures, sad faces, even a predominance of blue - but the attitude of the figures is less postured, the distortion less extreme, the blue more subdued. In 1905 saltimbanques and mountebanks, the gypsies of the theater, replace the blind beggars and woeful women (see our listings of The Old Guitarist and Woman Ironing After Picasso paintings) of the Blue period.
This pair of saltimbanques was painted in March 1905. They are not on stage - the curtain has fallen, the audience has gone; they are two weary travelers at the outskirts of a town. The taller boy carries a pack. The colors of his lozenged tights, muted as they seem, are more varied than those of any costume of the Blue period. The younger boy, his beardless face perversely aged beyond his actual years, touches a gentle mongrel dog, such as Picasso himself owned.
