Outstanding Fully Restored Flawless Condition. Pristine.
Note: This is a medium sized-version of a tambour door roll top desk, not a full sized behemoth nor a petite child’s version; very unique size. This is a C-Curve tambour roll top desk, not an S-Curve nor a Cylinder desk. There is a distinction between cylinder desks and roll-top desks (a.k.a. curtain desks). On cylinder desks, the top that swings into place to cover the writing surface is not flexible, and the track is therefore a circular arc. On roll-top desks, the top that rolls into place is flexible, and the track typically has a C (circular arc) or S shape. C-Curve tambour roll top desks came about in the early 19th century, with S-Curve tambour roll tops being introduced around the mid to late 19th century. Another interesting bit of history is that the tambour, or roll-top desk, with writing tables, drawers and pigeonholes existed in England by 1788 but these were much smaller than the roll top desks that were popular in the U.S. a century later. This beauty appears to be made in the pattern of the smaller English version.
This beauty came to us via my brother-in-law almost two decades ago. It was in such a ragged state that my husband decided to take the desk apart, piece-by-piece, and fully restore it.
Approximately 25% of the wood was deteriorated and was replaced with new. While, the roll top tambour door’s wood, as a whole was in good shape, the canvas that held the slat boards in place was completely rotted and replaced; starting with removal of all the slat boards from the old rotted canvas. All slat boards were hand sanded, finished and placed on the new canvas. The arched tambour door guides were rotted and new ones were made from 2” oak boards; nylon strapping was placed in the grooves to allow for effortless opening and closing of the tambour door. The built-in locking mechanism (original to the desk) is fully functional. When the tambour door is fully open, the locking mechanism pushes down a spring-loaded shaft which unlocks the three side drawers. When the tambour door is closed, the three side drawers lock automatically. Locks for both the tambour and center drawers are new; keys included. Pull-out writing board was in excellent shape, as were three of the four drawers. One drawer has two new drawer casing side boards, and to facilitate easy gliding when opening and closing, all drawers now have nylon glides. The pigeonhole platform was in excellent shape. All the paneling was replaced with double-sided oak veneer paneling to keep the look-and-feel of the desk as close as possible to original. Finally, the desk was finished in a Sedona Red stain with four coats of hand-rubbed Tung oil.
