A rare and beautiful small antique tabletop Tansu box in a red lacquer finish, hand forged iron corner braces, handles and latches, two long drawers and a lift top compartment on top. Interior of top compartment and bottom of chest have applied paper linings with extensive Japanese calligraphy on them. Some staining on the linings as well as losses to the exterior lacquer finish appropriate for age and use.
This chest was purchased in Japan in the mid-20th century, is made of elm and has locks but no key.
