An early-20th-century figural study showing a finely dressed young woman seated in the countryside and admiring her necklace in a hand-mirror.
Signed lower right "Biro J." for Jozsef Biro (Hungarian, and painted circa 1920.
Biro studied at the Academie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and subsequently with Ferdinand Hodler at the Academie de Geneve. Over the course of a long career, he exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes medals and juried awards including the Prix des Amis de l'Art (1923). Biro is well listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including Barcelona, St. Louis, Budapest and Stockholm among others.
