This figure -- a creature of the sea and a companion to Neptune -- is solid, resolved and muscular, his face chiseled and classically handsome. Netzer had depicted a triton before -- for a fountain on Herzog Wilhelm Street in Munich -- one of an array of fountains with Netzer figures in that city. The artist also excelled as a teacher, with students under his supervision at the Dusseldorf School of Arts and Crafts. The sculpture is signed and exhibits the foundry mark for the Ferdinand von Miller Foundry in Munich. See less
