With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this rare and unusual late 19th century antique work table. For collectors of early and rare Southern furniture this example is worth immediate consideration as it is a charming and scarce table that would benefit any traditional interior. We have been privileged to have owned and offered countless early American single drawer work tables throughout the past few decades and this stand truly stands apart from all others we have encountered before. These stands were traditionally referred to as work tables since commonly the lady of a home would sit at the table for extended periods of time sewing or fashioning clothing for members of the household. Today these stands are used in nearly all rooms of the home as they make excellent bedside tables, accent pieces for hallways and points of entry, or around the home anywhere that may benefit from the addition of a small table. We do our utmost to maintain a collection of affordable and interesting examples from every historical region of the country as they remain in high demand and are becoming increasingly difficult to replace.
This work table is constructed from southern yellow pine and was fitted with a rare specimen of mahogany originally from a tropical rainforest by the previous owner. The contrast between the traditional and exotic hardwoods creates a wonderful effect and makes this table an interesting conversation piece. The table stands on four legs which were each masterfully turned with exceptional detail to emulate spools of cotton thread. Examples of "spool turned" furniture became increasingly popular in the mid to late 19th century as an artistic embellishment which furthered the unique and interesting designs of regional American furniture. The legs which grace this table are particularly well done with a bulbous style and shape that really accentuates the overall form and provides a rich and desirable character which collectors passionately seek out. The drawer features primitive handcut dovetail joinery along with the original drawer panel that has oxidized continually throughout a century and a half of existence. There is a lock fitted into the drawer interior that furthers the historical charm of this table. The table also features two turned knobs with an inset brass escutcheon between them and wonderful pegged joinery throughout the sides of the frame which ensures stability and strength for future generations. The stand measures 20 3/4" wide x 22" deep x 28" tall.
