This is a great piece. This is truly one of those pieces I am happy to have hanging in my office until someone wants to purchase it. For many years I have been a huge fan of Milton Greene. For those not familiar with Greene, I have included his biography below. I acquired this photograph from a collection of important photographs from the estate of the founder of Sire Records. First thing I must say is that this photograph is definitely far from perfect. It definitely has some issues but because it is such a great image I had it archivally matted in order to present it in a way that still displays it as a wonderful work. This is the large version of the photograph measuring 16 x 20 inches. It has all the proper stamps on the back including the copyright of Milton Greene and most importantly, it is an original photograph that was done by Milton himself, signed and dated in 1978. As for the issues, you can see the photograph in the unframed images. It has an obvious chunk out of the lower left corner. There are a few other edge tears but nothing bad. There is a scuff to the right of her head and a some other smaller scuffs within the image. There is also some shadowing along the left side and a little up along the top but nothing too bad. Really it all sounds a lot worse than it is. I had the photograph archivally matted with many of the issues hidden behind the matte. The display image measures 14 x 18 1/2 inches. I had a period frame that I had it framed in that is simple and really displays the photograph beautifully. Frame measures 27 x 32 1/2 inches. All in all, it is a wonderful original photograph that displays beautifully. Do your own research on this image. This is the rarest of the Dietrich photographs by Greene. I have found a few examples having come to auction in the past 30 years and it always sells for a few thousand and up. You can buy modern reprints of the photograph as well for many times what I am asking. Dont miss this chance. It will happily hang on my office walls until it gets purchased.
For those not familiar with the photographer, his biography from a gallery that sells his photographs reads: " For over four decades, Milton H. Greene made his mark as one of the most celebrated photographers in the world. Born in New York in 1922, Greene began taking pictures at the early age of 14. He apprenticed with photographers Eliot Elisofon and Louise Dahl-Wolfe. By age twenty-three, he was referred to as "Color Photography's Wonder Boy. A majority of Greene ́s work in the fifties and sixties appeared in Life, Look, Harper's Bazaar, Town & Country, and Vogue. Along with other eminent photographers, Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, and Norman Parkinson, he is credited for elevating fashion photography to the level of fine art. As a director, he exhibited a remarkable rapport with his subjects. His willingness to be vulnerable, invoked an obvious ease around him, allowed him to create images of unequalled intimacy. His timing was flawless. He was shy, but his certainty behind the camera, revealed the qualities that best embodied his subject's persona.
