ORIGINAL 1979 JANINE LEROUX-GUILLAUME (1927-2018) 'DERNIERES TENDRESSES' LIMITED EDITION COLOR ENGRAVING
This is a great piece. I was unfamiliar with the artist, when I first saw these prints from a local estate. I could just tell by looking at them, that they were done by an incredible artist. Turns out I was correct. This is one of 3 works I acquired by Janine Leroux-Guillaume, the Canadian Master Printmaker. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included her biography below. The works are all part of the works she did where she was known for Abstracting nature. This one is titled 'Final Tenderness' which I think refers to the leaves last breath of life as Autumn and Winter set in. A large colored intaglio engraving measuring 17 1/2 x 24 inches. Signed, titled, dated and numbered from an edition of 45 in pencil below the image. Outstanding as created condition. Archival matte and frame are complimentary and ready to hang. It is glazed with UV lucite that actually show some scratches but nothing too bad. Frame measures 25 1/4 x 31 inches. If you collect or like the artist, check my store for the others I am offering.
For those not familiar with the artist, her biography from a museum that has the artist's work in it's permanent collection reads: "TJanine Leroux Guillaume is recognised as a Master Printer but also worked in other media including painting, collage and sculpture. She studied at the Ecole des beaux-arts du Montreal, and was also invited a number of times to attend residencies at the Atelier Lacouriere in Paris beginning in 1959. Along with with her husband, Pierre Guillaume, who was also a printmaker, she travelled extensively in Europe and the U.S. Leroux-Guillaume was also recognized for her teaching at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and at the Universités du Québec à Montréal and Hull as well as the CEGEP du Vieux Montreal between 1965 and 1969. Although her early work was figurative, she later transitioned to abstraction and surrealism in her representations of nature. She was known for exploring and mastering new techniques in printmaking, including wood engraving as well as the complex technique "maniere noire" (dark matter). She associated with the well-known Automatist artists; however, she never became a member of this or any group. Her work has been exhibited in different parts of Europe and is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec among others. Janine Leroux-Guillaume passed away the day after the opening of a retrospective exhibition of her work."
