This round lacquer ware box from Asia is made from bamboo and lacquer. In Thailand, lacquer receptacles called hsun-ok were used for centuries to carry gifts of food to the Buddhist monasteries. The tapered top of this hsun-ok, which is of the particular shape called ok-kwet, is created by a tray that fit on top of the wide bottom footed bowl. The top is crowned by a small inverted bowl. The interior surfaces of the pieces are cinnabar-colored lacquer, the color used by the artisan for the first series of lacquer coatings, and the reddish hue of the base lacquer shows subtly through in places on the black lacquer exterior. This is an elegant black exterior and red interior lacquer tribal offering vessel used to carry offerings to temple ceremonies. See less
