An exceptional 18th-century Italian paravento (folding screen) adorned with a panoramic oil-painted composition depicting an evocative maritime scene in the historic port of Genoa. Executed in the manner of an Old Master painting, the narrative unfolds gracefully across five panels, where grand sailing vessels anchor in a bustling harbor while elegantly dressed figures gather along the waterfront.
At the center of the composition, a nobleman of distinction is ceremoniously received by local dignitaries and attendants, suggesting an important arrival or diplomatic occasion. The harbor beyond is animated by merchant ships, billowing sails, and distant architectural vistas, conveying the commercial and cultural significance of Genoa as one of the great maritime powers of the Mediterranean.
Richly framed by painted Rococo scrollwork and decorative cartouches, the scene is rendered in a warm palette of ochres, golds, and soft sea tones that have mellowed beautifully with age. The continuous composition across the panels creates the effect of a theatrical stage set, inviting the viewer into a world of elegance, commerce, and ceremony.
Both decorative and historically evocative, this rare Italian screen functions as a work of art as much as a furnishing—an impressive statement piece that captures the romance and grandeur of 18th-century Genoese society.
