About the artist:
John Gould (1804–1881) was an English ornithologist, naturalist, and publisher renowned for producing some of the most important bird illustrations and ornithological books of the 19th century. Born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, Gould became one of the most influential figures in the study and documentation of birds.
Gould worked closely with his wife, Elizabeth Gould, an accomplished illustrator who created many of the early drawings for his publications. Together with a team of artists and lithographers, Gould produced lavishly illustrated folios that documented bird species from around the world.
Among his most famous works are The Birds of Australia (1840–1848), A Monograph of the Trochilidae (The Hummingbirds, 1849–1861), and The Birds of Great Britain (1862–1873). These publications combined scientific observation with highly detailed hand-colored lithographs, many of which are now considered masterpieces of natural history illustration.
Today, John Gould’s prints and books are highly collectible and held in major museum collections worldwide, valued for their scientific significance, artistic quality, and historical importance in ornithology.
