Kilims are flat, tapestry-woven carpets or rugs produced in many countries known for hand-knotted rug making. They can serve purely decorative purposes or function as prayer rugs and are very popular as floor coverings. Kilims are created by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands to produce a flat surface without pile. Technically, kilim weaves are tapestry weaves, specifically weft-faced plain weaves. When the weft yarn reaches the end of a color boundary, it is rewound at that point. Consequently, if the boundary of a field is a straight vertical line, a vertical slit forms between the two differently colored areas where they meet.
For this reason, most Kilims are classified as “slit-woven” textiles. Collectors appreciate the slits because they create sharply defined designs that emphasize the geometry of the weave. The weft strands, which carry the visible design and color, are almost always wool, while the hidden warp strands can be either wool or cotton. The warp strands are visible only at the ends, where they emerge as fringe. Whether draped over furniture or placed on the floor, a Kilim adds a splash of color to any room.
