The lamp's body is painted with an old trompe l'oeil "letter frame" illustration. John Frederick Peto (1854 - 1907) was an American trompe l'oeil ("deceiving the eye") painter, trompe l'oeil is a genre of still life painting designed to deceive the viewer into mistaking the objects in the painting for reality. Peto often painted old-fashioned "letter racks," which were boards nailed into squares with ribbons for placement Notes, letters, pencils, and photos.
