Born in China around the turn of the late 19th / early 20th century, exceptionally executed small sculptural form, modeled as a foo dog / guardian lion, with bulging eyes, mouth ajar, standing on integral stepped plinth base. Finely detailed throughout, the rich green glaze having an exceptional warmth, depth, and lustrous sheen.

Originally intended as an altar incense burner / censer, today this pair would look stunning on a shelf as bookends, on your table or desk as protective statues, or on your fireplace mantle as playful figural candlesticks. They would also make a wonderful gift!

Good original antique condition with beautifully aged heavily worn warm rich dark patina and attractive crazing. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including a large chip to the back corner of one base, small nicks and minor scattered loss to glazing, and significant buildup, all wear commensurate with age, use, and handling.

Imperial Lions:
Chinese or Imperial guardian lions, also known as lion dogs or foo dogs in English, are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. Typically made of stone, they are also known as stone lions or shishi. The concept, which originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism, features a pair of highly stylized lions—often one male with a ball and one female with a cub—which were thought to protect the building from harmful spiritual influences.

Used in imperial Chinese palaces and tombs, the lions subsequently spread to other parts of Asia including Japan (see komainu), Korea, Tibet, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, and Singapore, becoming an important part of Asian ceramics and mythical folklore
