This large-scale art vessel was designed and hand-formed in 1985 by American ceramic artist Karl Christiansen at his studio in Wilton, Iowa. The sculptural piece represents a significant departure from the maker's typical portfolio of functional stoneware, executed instead as an oversized decorative object. The material composition consists of unglazed, rough-textured stoneware contrasted by an iridescent, metallic-blue glaze surrounding a prominent hexagonal rim opening. Structural design elements include precision-incised linear markings, a reticulated pierced triangular cutout, and complex geometric framing. The matte charcoal exterior displays prominent surface speckling and dark carbon spotting, which are intentional structural results of ash contact during the post-firing raku reduction phase. The underside of the stoneware body retains the incised cursive signature of the artist, along with the date and geographic location markers. Great vintage condition with no cracks or chips - minor wear commensurate with age - please see photos and video. Display museum quality ceramic.
The artist held an MFA in ceramics and founded the pottery department at Luther College, establishing a significant academic legacy in Midwestern studio craft. His works are preserved in permanent public institutions, including the Iowa State University Museum and the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum.
