Gold overlay depicts a woman on tiptoe holding a up a ball dispensing a stream of gold fireflies. This art glass vase was made in Norway and dated 1988. Romain de Tirtoff (1892–1990) otherwise known as Erté was caledl "The Father of Art Deco." He was born to a distinguished family in Saint Petersburg Russia. Erté’s pseudonym comes from the French pronunciation of his initials (Air Tay). He was considered a French artist despite his Russian birth due to his migration to France in 1912.

Erté worked for French fashion designer Paul Poiret, landed a contract with Harper's Bazaar, illustrating and designing covers (over 240!) and was a successful costume and set designer for early movies. However, by the 1950s, Erté fell into relative obscurity.

In the 1960s, there was an increased interest in Erté’s work. He created a series of sculptures and lithographs that revived the Art Deco movement. His work is included in the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Museum 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. Erté died on April 21, 1990, in Paris, France, at the age of 97. See less
