An uncommon Sumi-e watercolor painting on rice paper by renowned Sumi-e artist, Lee Gerry Wertheimer. The painting is titled,"A Purple Flower from My Garden". Signed with a red seal, the artwork is in excellent condition with no issues. Painted on handmade rice paper and is attached to a black mat. With the mat the piece measures 15"L x 20"H. The watercolor itself is about 13-1/2”L x 18”H.
Lee Gerry Wertheimer (1950-2019) earned a Master of Arts degree from NYU. Her art exhibitions span the globe including work exhibited at the Fine Arts Pavilion at the 1983 World's Fair in Knoxville. She was the winner of the 1996 Suffolk Art League Juried Exhibition. In 1993 she was honored to be a delegate in the American Cultural Exchange Delegation to China where she studied painting and calligraphy.
Ms. Wertheimer combines traditional eastern painting drawing methods with modern western art techniques, adhering to the simple elegance and poetic concepts underlying the philosophical foundations of Sumi-e ink painting. Wertheimer describes her medium as ``water-based, using permanent Chinese pigments, which I hand grind, to paint with imported handmade Japanese or Chinese rice paper.''
About Sumi-e: The tools used are known as the Four Treasures - the brush, ink, ink stone and paper The ink is not ink at all but consists of a formula of soot and glue made into a stick by a special process. This in turn is rubbed in water on an ink stone and forms what is called black ink, "sumi," in Japanese. The artist must learn to use ink freely with a controlled brush stroke. To this basic technique, color may be added. Sources of this color are varied but include powdered jade, white pearl, ground malachite and other pigments from nature such as rattan yellow and indigo. An integral part of the composition is the red seal, which signifies the artist's name. Themes from nature are the subject matter, but brush painters do not try to imitate, copy or master nature.
