A vibrant and beautiful mountainous landscape signed and dated, Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh (South African 1913-2004). Sitting and staring at this lovely work one can almost get the sense of being on the island looking out onto the beautiful mountains in front of them. Silver leaf frame.

Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh was a Dutch artist who created many landscape paintings of the Western Cape of South Africa. Often featuring monumental mountain ranges framed by rural milieu and snaking waterways, his work was painted in rich hues and with atmospheric perspective. Born on April 6, 1913 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Jongh moved with his father, the renowned painter Tinus de Jongh, and family to Fish Hoek, South Africa in 1921. By 1937, he was exhibiting his work in Port Elizabeth, South Africa to positive response. During World War II, de Jongh studied at the Slade School for Art in London before embarking to Normandy in August 1944 to work on the front as a war artist, returning to South Africa in 1945 thanks to official discharge due to injury. He continued to work on paintings and prints throughout his life, exhibiting regionally in South Africa until his death on March 11, 2004 in Cape Town, South Africa. See less
