This elegant blackened terracotta African Zulu beer vase is embellished with circles and triangles formed by clusters of welts called 'amasumpa.' Which is one of the oldest forms of Zulu pottery decoration. The glossy ebony finish of these pots is achieved through a meticulous process involving a second firing in a dry grass fire, followed by the application of animal fat to polish their surfaces.
Traditionally, Zulu women are responsible for brewing the beer and using these pots to ferment and store it. The process of making beer is an important cultural practice that is passed down through generations. In Zulu tradition, the consumption of this beer is intertwined with rituals honoring both the living and the deceased. During ceremonies dedicated to commemorating and appeasing ancestors, the beer is respectfully offered as a gesture of reverence and remembrance.
