Description: iv, 167, [1] pp. (8vo) 21.5 x 13 cm. (8.5 x 5 inches), period calf rebacked, blind rules. First Edition in English. Letters about the French court of Louis XV, told under the guise of correspondence to and from his mistress, the famous Jeanne Béuc, better known as Madame du Barry, who died at the guillotine in 1793. Pidanzat de Mairobert was a prolific author who, as the royal censor, had access to affairs of the court at the highest levels. This copy with the heraldic bookplates of William Tennant and Lauren Griswold Du Bois. Kearsly published four editions in two years and all are relatively uncommon.
