With our compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the distinct pleasure in offering this wonderful antique oak office chair. We are always in pursuit of fine antique desk chairs to accompany any of the various antique desks which we offer and have found these examples to be superior to anything made today and most often are the best value available. The form of this chair is known as the Bank of England design which became popular during the later years of the 19th century during the Victorian period. These chairs became the perfect companions to the Victorian roll top desk produced throughout the same era and are commonly paired together as each piece were quite literally made for each other. Production of these chairs continued into the first half of the 20th century with notable furniture manufacturers such as the Derby Desk Company of Boston, Massachusetts leading the way until the iconic design was featured in nearly all libraries, office spaces, classrooms, and courtrooms across the nation. These chairs can be distinguished from one another and dated by the cast iron chair mechanisms mounted underneath the seat of the chairs which connects to the chair base.
Despite the solid wooden stature of this form these Bank of England chairs are regarded for the comfort which they provide. The curved top of each chair is designed to contour across the back of each sitter while eight curved lateral supports assist the vertical backside. This chair has arm supports that are taller in stature which is an important consideration if the user is intending to sit in this chair for extended periods of time. The seat is curved to contour around the sitter's legs and back end with a shaped saddle design. The entire chair is supported by the original cast iron seat mechanism and features four well formed legs along with caster wheels. This chair is very strong and dependable with solid oak construction and has developed a fine golden color throughout time which enhances the overall appearance of this wonderful piece. The chair measures 21" wide x 19 1/8" deep x 33 1/4" tall with a 19" seat height.
