A long metal rod fits into four hook placements on back of chair to set four different angles. The back will also lay completely down, with hinges, for laying flat. Beautiful silk printed material upholsters front and back of the chair with silk braid trim. Included is a gout chair, meant to raise legs to lessen the pain of gout - at the time. Functions like an ottoman. Not only is this a functional sturdy chair, it is a time capsule and center of conversation. Chair can be used upright and without wooden ottoman or used as a relaxing chair or a complete reclining chair with wooden gout stool to raise the feet. Your depth can be increased or decreased having to do with where you put the wooden stool - from directly up to chair or moving it further out. 53” depth that I noted is having the wooden stool directly against the pink chair, as pictured. less
