Few artists have mastered the use of pigments in the way that Sax Berlin has and his delicate touch with them imbues this painting with warmth and love. The dark inked lines surround and cosset the mother and her child and are reminiscent of religious art in Renaissance Italy while being a modern reinterpretation of the subject. Picasso used the line to great effect and in this piece Berlin has channelled it equally effectively to create a poignant study of a mother and her child.
Hand ground pigments, with egg tempera and ink.
