Offered is a decorative vintage mid 20th Century bowl (for sugar, a condiment, or jam) with lid and a small spoon from Oaxaca, Mexico made of the "barro negro" (black clay) that the region is famous for.
The origin of Barro Negro pottery dates back to Monte Albán, one of the earliest cities in Mesoamerica. Handmade with traditional artisan techniques in Oaxaca, these pieces commemorate the ancient culture of the region. The black clay gets its dark, intense, rich ebony color from the intense carbonization during the firing process. The end result yields beautiful objects - vases, bowls, etc. This covered bowl is multi-purpose and may also double as beautiful incense burner, or for arranging dried twigs or foliage for creating distinct tablescape centerpieces, and as an artisanal piece it brings elegance and a hint of global chic to any dining or living space.
It measures 4" in diameter and 5.5" across in width to the tip of the handle, and is 2" in height (and 3.5" with the lid on). The small spoon measures 1" in width, and 3.875" in length.
