Bernhard Zimmer's abstract paintings transmit the richness of multiple layers of oil paint applied with precision to create an overall composition that holds opposites - order and chaos, abstraction and representation, boldness and subtlety - in exquisite tension. Zimmer has created a positive stir at major international art fairs (Art Basel, Kunst Köln, etc.). His lively and mysterious compositions pique the taste of the serious art collector.
At first glance, the strikingly layered orange artwork appears abstract, similar to a meditative object. The viewer is lured into the painting by the finely textured surfaces, flooded by the colors and their subtle relationships, and ends up discovering that the picture is full of life. Fragments of lettering appear below the surface adding a further dimension to the contemporary composition.
This 40 inch tall by 47 inch wide horizontal original artwork is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted and it does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the back of the artwork. A certificate of authenticity from the gallery is included.
Bernhard Zimmer was born 1957 in Stuttgart, Germany in 1957 and attended at the Study of Cultural Studies in Hildesheim, Germany from 1978-1984. He lives and works in Cologne and has exhibited worldwide.
Working with oil and mixed media on canvas, he paints fields of soft shapes, blocks of color, and delicate lines; grids of sketchily rendered faces; and blocks of text or word fragments partially submerged, like hieroglyphics, in rich washes of color. Like reliefs, his compositions are built up from numerous layers of paint, marks, and images. Their surfaces shift with the light and the changing position of the viewer. Full of strength and fragility, Zimmer’s works reward patient viewing, revealing their rich visual nuances to those who take time to look into their layers.
The depth of color in his paintings is striking; as are the artworks themselves, they create a kind of ontology of life in the open space to make themselves felt. In some works, hundreds of small squares stick together in a narrow spectrum of colors and vibrate in their color nuances.
