Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this early 19th-century oil painting. As you gaze upon the picturesque woodland scene with a quiet lake or river in the background, several birds are taking flight, their sudden movement suggesting a disturbance in the peaceful setting, and the deer, standing alert in the dappled shade of the forest, with ears perked and eyes focused, seem to be reacting to the same unseen event.
This unsigned artwork, with an estimated origin from France, was created on cardboard and housed in a gold gilt wood frame. The back of the board bears a handwritten date "April 17th 1814", along with a series of illegible numbers/letters.
As you admire this piece, kindly take note of its well-worn condition: water damage to the cardboard, visible from both the front (see last photo) and the back. The frame exhibits wood cracks, seam separations (see Photo 10), discoloration and paint chips throughout. There is also paint loss to the upper side of the painting (see Photo 11). Restoration is recommended. Please carefully review all photos before making your purchase.
