Johannes Meyer Andersen's earliest interest in painting was inspired by Paul Gauguin's son, Jean, who took the young artist to exhibitions while staying with his family in the summer. Andersen first studied with Martin Rasmussen at the Royal Danish Art Academy and, subsequently, in Paris (1938, 1948, 1958-62), Italy (1950-56) and England. Andersen exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including Artist of the Year (Skagen, 1985).
