Italian designer and engineer Ernesto Gismondi is known for his contribution to the world of lighting design, through the famous lamp manufacturer Artemide, which he co-founded in 1960.
Gismondi was born in 1931 in San Remo, and studied aeronautical engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, where he graduated in 1957; He continued his studies in Rome at the Professional School of Engineering, where he obtained a degree in Rocket Engineering in 1959.
In 1960 he founded Artemide with the engineer and architect Sergio Mazza (born in Milan in 1931). The goal of the two is to create timeless and innovative objects from a technical point of view, and both will make an important contribution to the manufacturing catalogue, which is constantly evolving and expanding. Artemide's mission becomes the idealistic realization of unique lighting inspired by architecture - an objective achieved also thanks to collaborations with talents from the world of Italian and non-Italian design. Among Gismondi's most iconic designs for Artemide we remember the Sintesi series (1976), which includes table, floor and wall lamps; the Tholos wall lamp (1979), and the Tebe (1970s) and Zen (1988) floor lamps.
Between 1964 and 1984, Gismondi taught engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan
Gismondi's contribution to the world of lighting design has been consecrated by various awards and honours, including the Compasso d'Oro for lifetime achievement in 1994, the European Design Prize in 1997, and the Ernst & Young award as "Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2008 and 2009. He was also vice-president of the ADI (Association of Industrial Design), and held important positions in the world of design, for example at the Ministry of University and Research, and the Scientific Committee of I.S.I.A.
