Before the Vincennes Manufactory (opened in 1740) shifted to new premises at Sèvres in 1756 the porcelain production was marked with two blue-painted interlaced Ls. From 1754 onwards, these in turn usually enclose another letter or double letter, indicating the year in which the piece was produced. Sèvres was a direct outgrowth of Vincennes, when the King bought it outright in 1759, initiating the career of world-famous Sèvres porcelain.

Vincennes frequently copied the products of the extremely successful Meissen porcelain manufactory (the first in Europe to produce true hard-paste porcelain like that imported from China and Japan). This is noticeable in the attempt to reproduce the famous Meissen Schneeballen (snowball) motif.

Another interesting feature of these vases is the delicate insertion of blue, and it can be surmised that its presence on these vases is a precursor to the famous ‘bleu céleste’ color introduced in 1753, which the factory was well known for.

The vases were later adapted as Table Lamps probably in the 20th century. See less
