After earning a degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Gray earned an additional B.F.A. in theatre from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and an M.F.A. in costume and set design from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She served as resident set and costume designer at New Stage Theatre in Jackson, Mississippi for ten seasons where she designed costumes and scenery for more than 100 productions. She also taught costuming for two years in the Theatre Department at NE State Missouri University (now called Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri.

From 1998 to 2023 Gray was Gray Professor of Costume Design in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC outside of Charlotte, NC. In the summer she spent her summers as a costume designer for The Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina.

"The Soul of the White Ant" was produced by Tulane University Theatre and chosen to compete in the National Design Competition of the American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. in 1986. This watercolor was most probably produced as part of her MFA. See less
