By 1916, Renoir was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, and working in 3 dimensions was especially difficult for him. Around that time, he enlisted the help of Catalan artist Richard Guino to execute his designs. Both the “Little Blacksmith,” 1916, and the small “Washerwoman,” 1917-18, were collaborative efforts between Pierre-August Renoir and Richard Guino. Of note is the fact that the “Washerwoman” sculpture came in two sizes. The larger work was slightly different and titled “La Laveuse.” Both sculptures offered here are made of terra cotta. Each is signed.
Both sculptures are in very original condition with wear consistent with age and use.
