1940s Caucasian Kilim. Hand woven with vegetable dyed wool on wool foundation in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus.
Kilims & Flat Weaves are rugs without the pile. produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Generally woven on horizontal looms like tapestries, This weaving technique produces crisp geometrical designs. Being lighter in weight and softer to the touch than traditional pile rugs, kilims were also used as sofa covers, drapes, pillows, table covers and wall hangings as insulation from the extreme cold.
