Signed in the … Read more A lovely large vintage original offset lithograph, print, of painting "A Country Wedding" (1905) by Henri Rousseau. Signed in the print at the lower right corner: "Henri Julien Rousseau". Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a board of heavy paper. Numbered. Name of the artist and information about original painting will be found by lifting the plate. Comes from a rare art folio published by Albert Skira, in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1940s. First Limited Edition. Excellent condition - minor age wear on the the board, never framed.

It was the wedding of the daughter of a neighbour, a dairykeeper, that inspired Rousseau to paint this picture. It portrays admirably the little circle in which he moved, and he treats it with his unfailing tribute to decorum. The new-wed couple and their friends seem to have just stepped forth from the hairdresser's and dry-cleaner's establishments. So indeed do the dogs and the trees. But du to no plan aforethought are those marvelous "blacks", so logically arrayed and the way in which he lightens the texture of the right-hand side of the canvas with trees whose surprising foliage is less luxuriante than that of those on the left.
