Beautiful bird design bowl by distinguished Hopi pottery artist Garnet Pavatea (1915-1981).
One of Garnet’s most beautiful pottery techniques was to use two different colors of slip on the same vessel, one color for the inside of the piece and the other color for the outside. This bowl is one of those, with a rich reddish terracotta polished glaze on the outside and a warm creamy yellow on the inside. Few Hopi potters use the red, as it is more difficult to polish, fire, and have it come out with a consistent coloration. The abstract swirling bird is stunning, and thought to be an eagle or parrot.
Garnet Pavatea was born in Hano, near First Mesa, Arizona. She was known as Flower Girl, a Hopi-Tewa from the Tewa Village on First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation and lived there. She began making pottery in the 1940s and was an active potter from until the time of her passing in 1981. For most of her career, she fired her pottery in the traditional outdoor manner using sheep dung. On her older pieces, discernable "fire clouds" can be seen. Like the Nampeyo family, Garnet perfected a style all her own, drawing many design elements from ancient Sikyátki pottery sherds.

This was purchased from the estate of an archeologist and anthropologist who worked at the Hopi mesas during her career. I am told that she purchased it directly from the artist on the First Mesa of the Hopi Land in Arizona. less
