Umberto Romano (1906–1982) was an Italian-American artist known for his contributions to the American art scene in the mid-20th century. He was born in Bracigliano, Italy, and immigrated to the United States with his family at a young age, settling in Boston, Massachusetts. Romano studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and later attended the National Academy of Design in New York City. He became associated with the Social Realist movement during the 1930s, creating paintings that depicted scenes of urban life, industrial landscapes, and social commentary. Throughout his career, Romano experimented with various styles and subjects, including portraiture, landscape, and allegorical themes. He was also known for his murals, which can be found in public buildings and institutions across the United States. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Romano was a passionate educator, teaching at several institutions, including the Art Students League of New York and the School of Visual Arts. See less
